Feminists and Porn

Feminsts are generally unpleasant people. It’s tough fighting the oppressive patriarchy everyday, though I don’t excuse them for that.

I have a hypothetical question concerning feminists and their opinion of porn. On the one hand feminists grant women the power to sleep around, whether for their pleasure or in order to empower themselves. But on the other hand feminists generally oppose pornography as exploiting women. Additionally now there is the movement of pushing plus size models so as to put more “real” women in modeling to change the ideal image presented, but that’s not entirely related and is for another question.

So my question is;

Would feminists be against porn if it was given away free as art and essentially a non-profit industry?

Of course porn would never be not for profit, that would be stupid, but if it were they could operate freely knowing that the women were doing so of their own free will. Of course they already do it of their own free will, but a good feminist might say that it’s only because they’re motivated by the easy money available by volunteering to be exploited.

Doesn’t working for free change that? You can hardly be exploited if you’re a volunteer charity worker.

  1. How does this:

    On the one hand feminists grant women the power to sleep around, whether for their pleasure or in order to empower themselves.

    even relate to this:

    But on the other hand feminists generally oppose pornography as exploiting women.

    ?

    Aside from the curious attribution of feminists “granting power” to women how does your comparison work? Human beings can choose to have sex with people vs pornography?

    Doesn’t compute.

    Would feminists be against porn if it was given away free as art and essentially a non-profit industry?

    Most would be, as it illustrates a sexual dynamic that objectifies and degrades women.

    Doesn’t working for free change that? You can hardly be exploited if you’re a volunteer charity worker.

    Exploitation does not require a monetary exchange. If you volunteer to be exploited and debased, not being paid doesn’t nullify the former.
